Maj. Gen. Giovanni GAGLIANO

Head, C4I Systems and Digital Transformation, Italian Defense General Staff, Italy

Maj. Gen. Giovanni GAGLIANO Appointed Lieutenant in 1992, he was assigned to the 11th Signal Regiment in Civitavecchia, as Platoon and Company Commander, until 1999. After attending the 126th Italian General Staff Course, in 2000 he was assigned at the C4IEW Command in Anzio as Staff Officer. In 2001-02, he attended at the Combined General Staff College in Leavenworth (USA). After, he was assigned to the Army General Staff as Staff Officer at the General Planning Branch until 2009. During this period, he attended the Higher Institute of Joint Force Staff Course in Rome and, in 2006-07, he served in the UN Strategic Military Cell (New York), within the UNIFIL Mission in Lebanon. In 2009-10, he returned to Civitavecchia to take command of the Tonale Signal Battalion and, from 2012 to 2014, as Commanding Officer of the 28th Operational Communications Regiment in Pesaro. He held several positions in direct support of Top level Authorities including: Head of Section and Military Assistant to the Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of Defence, as Staff Officer at the Office of the Army Chief of Staff and Chief of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff. He took part to various multinational operations abroad, inter alia in Somalia (1993), Bosnia Herzegovina (1996 and 1998), Kosovo (2000) and Afghanistan (2005 and 2011). From 2016 to 2019 he held the position of Military Attaché at the Italian Embassy in the United Kingdom, in London. From 2019 to 2021 he took command of the “Pinerolo” Brigade, the only fully digitalized manouvre brigade of the Italian Army. From 2021 to 2022 he served as the Head of the C5I Department at the Army General Staff in Rome. In July 2022 he has been appointed the Head of the VI Division - C4I Systems and Transformation of the Italian Defence General Staff in Rome. He holds a University degree in Political Sciences from the University of Trieste and a degree in Information Sciences from the University of Turin. He also earned two Masters in Strategic Sciences and Strategic-Military International Studies. He is married and has a son and a daughter.
