Head of Information Superiority Unit, European Defence Agency (EDA), Ireland
David Byrne was appointed Head of Unit, Information Superiority, within the Capability, Armament and Planning Directorate at the European Defence Agency on 1 March 2024.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1966, he joined the Irish Civil Service in 1984. Prior to his current position, Byrne served as a Project Officer at the EDA, with responsibility for the implementation of the Capability Development Priorities, a role he assumed in May 2019.
Throughout his career, Byrne has held positions across several Irish government ministries from 1984 to 2019, including responsibility for European Defence Agency matters within the Irish Department of Defence from 2010. In this capacity, he represented Ireland in numerous EDA working bodies, and in 2015 he was appointed to the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Union.
Byrne holds, among other qualifications, a degree in Public Administration from the Institute of Public Administration in Ireland and a postgraduate Diploma in International Studies and Negotiation from the University of Kent, UK.
